Apprentices
Starting salary of £17,768 with annual increases rising to c.£21,800 on completion

HMGCC has unique and exciting opportunities for an IT Services Apprentice to join our growing ICT Services team. You will have the opportunity to work with the latest technology and equipment and you'll be working with ICT specialists and will gain a solid foundation of IT and infrastructure support skills on which to build your future career.

What makes HMGCC different is that you'll have the opportunity to get involved in a diverse range of hardware and software products. We'll give you the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to deliver a range of high quality IT services for a variety of customers.

You will be required to work a flexible, informal rota to ensure support is available 0800-1800 (excluding Bank Holidays).

As an IT Services Apprentice, you will complete an 18-month development programme towards the Apprenticeship Standard for the Level 3 Infrastructure Technician.


Your Technical Skills

The minimum technical skills and qualifications we need you to already have:

• GCSEs or equivalent at Grade A* to C or 9-4 (in English, Mathematics and a Technology/IT subject), OR
• A relevant Level 2 Apprenticeship, OR
• Other relevant qualification and experience

The Scheme

Over the course of your two-year apprenticeship, your time will be split between attending a local college to complete the academic qualification of the programme and on the job training at HMGCC. This allows you to build a solid foundation of practical skills and technical knowledge. The entire apprenticeship programme is based on blended learning through classroom training, various mentored work placements and customer projects. We also fund your membership with a professional organisation such as the British Computer Society.

Your apprenticeship programme will ensure you gain both the breadth and depth of experience you need to become a vital part of our future. We will offer you a positive and creative environment to work in and give you all of the tools and training to develop and be the best that you can be.

On successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will begin your career working at HMGCC as a IT Technician within the corporate ICT Team. We will continue to invest and develop your skills and knowledge in our organisation where the opportunities to progress are boundless if you have the potential and ambition.

The apprenticeship programme content may be subject to some variation in light of our continuous improvements. If there are significant changes, you will be informed in writing prior to the programme start.


Scheme Qualifications

You will complete your apprenticeship with a City & Guilds Level 3 Infrastructure Technician Apprenticeship. But your development doesn't stop there: you may still have the opportunity to continue your development towards a higher level apprenticeship, or other professional qualification.


Your Career

Here's a flavour of the types of thing you could be doing once you've achieved your apprenticeship:

Service Desk / Desktop Services Teams: is a single point of contact for IT users and other government IT Service Desks across the UK. Part of a growing team, you'll provide 1st and 2nd line technical support and escalate to relevant technical teams, when necessary. You'll assist with equipment moves and roll-outs in support of change programmes. You'll assist with upgrades and new system releases and you'll develop solid working relationships with customers across our organisation.

Server / Application Teams: is responsible for resolving technical server issues. You'll carry out development and ongoing maintenance of our IT systems and our customers' core business solutions. You'll assist with change programmes, upgrades, task automation and remedy server and system issues.

Network / Infrastructure Teams: is responsible for maintaining and enforcing corporate network security. You'll help to plan and monitor network usage and investigate network issues and liaise with colleagues and suppliers regarding our secure WAN connectivity. You'll assist with change programmes, anti-virus systems, data backups and remedy connectivity issues.

Web / Product Teams: is responsible for supporting HMGCC's system applications. You'll be evaluating business applications and will be involved in integrating appropriate solutions with existing in-house applications. You'll also assist with change programmes, upgrades and new system releases by supporting and investigating user queries.

Your application will not be eligible if you already hold a City & Guilds Level 3 IT Infrastructure Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
