£37,958 - £40,796. This position is available full-time for 37 hours per week Monday to Friday (flexible working patterns will be considered) or part-time at a minimum of 30 hours. Potential to Work from Home on an ad hoc basis.

As a Power Sources Scientific Engineer at HMGCC, you’ll help drive the research, design and development needed to deliver cutting-edge energy storage technology to protect the UK’s national security. You’ll work on a mixture of fast paced delivery and longer-term pull-through of next generation technologies; and will have the opportunity to help shape a new multi-million-pound Power Sources facility at HMGCC. 

As part of a multi-skilled team working closely with Development Engineers from across several disciplines, projects cover all facets of engineering from concept to delivery. Your responsibilities include the development of power sources systems, from initial gathering of requirements and analysis, through design and verification, to the planning for transfer into service. You’ll provide technical expertise with the design and testing of products, applying best working practice, and focusing on safety and compliance.

You’ll also work alongside Partners in Industry, Academia, and Suppliers, from both home and overseas, to develop, understand or obtain the best and latest technology on offer. Horizon scanning is integral to the role, and you’ll help develop new and novel techniques to deliver HMGCC’s technology and take the lead in establishing new analytical and fundamental research capabilities furthering our status as a Centre of Excellence.

More About You

You will already have:

  • A strong background in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics, to degree level or equivalent
  • Experience working with and knowledge of battery chemistries and their performance characteristics
  • Awareness and understanding of other power and energy systems, such as fuel cells, power harvesting or power transfer etc

To strengthen your application, it would be beneficial if you have one or more of the following (but these are not essential):

  • An understanding of the fundamentals of electrochemistry
  • Experience or awareness in use of battery management electronics, such as safety systems, fuel gauging technology
  • Skills in battery test methods and practices
  • Experience of battery pack design and charging regimes
  • Knowledge of health and Safety issues involved in handing batteries, fuel cells etc.
  • Experience in carrying out risk assessments and implementing their findings

Putting your skills to use

Using your diverse range of skills within the power sources centre, you will:

  • Provide the customer and delivery areas with power sources consultancy and advice.
  • Manage the evaluation of new and alternative battery systems and chemistries.
  • Help to develop novel techniques for the design and manufacture of improved energy storage devices.
  • Lead the establishment of several new analytical capabilities within a purpose-built facility.
  • Liaise with development labs to ensure all power sources requirements are fit for purpose, safe and compliant.
  • Ensure all battery profile tests are appropriate to their intended applications.
  • Provide interpretation of all test results with respect to cell chemistry and application.
  • Offer advice on Health and Safety issues surrounding power sources technology and promote best practices with respect to the storage, handling, and final use.
